Flash-in-the-pan weight loss pills promise high and deliver low. But early signs that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may cut body fat have been reinforced by the results of the first yearlong trial conducted by Norwegian scientists.

They gave 157 healthy, overweight adults identical daily capsules containing either 4.5 g of olive oil or 3.5 g of CLA. Body fat dropped by 9% more (an average of 7 to 8 pounds) in those who took CLA than in those who took olive oil during the year.

Neither total calories nor exercise patterns differed between the two groups. There were some minor drops in "good" HDL cholesterol and increases in "bad" LDL cholesterol. If you have cholesterol problems, make sure you check with your doctor before trying CLA.
